Local Government Areas
In 1976, Plateau State had fourteen local government areas (LGAs). New LGAs were carved out of the large ones in 1989, 1991 and 1996, so that today, the new Plateau State is subdivided into the following seventeen LGAs:
  • Barkin Ladi
    Barkin Ladi (or Barakin Ladi) is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Barkin Ladi at 9°32′00″N 8°54′00″E.
  • Bassa
    Bassa is a Local Government Area in the north of Plateau State, Nigeria, bordering Kaduna and Bauchi States. Its headquarters are in the town of Bassa at9°56′00″N 8°44′00″E.
  • Bokkos
    Bokkos is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria.Its headquarters are in the town of Bokkos at 9°18′00″N 9°00′00″E.
  • Jos East
    Jos East is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Angware.
  • Jos North
    Jos North is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the State capital of Jos.
  • Jos South
    Jos South is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Bukuru at 9°48′00″N 8°52′00″E.
  • Kanam Local Government
    Kanam Local Government, which is often described as Home of Canle and Conon with Dengi as its headquarters, has an area of27, 884 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 178,309 people. It is divided into four districts namely Dengi, Kanam.
  • Kanke Local Government
    Kanke Local Government Council is located at the southeastern slope of the Jos Plateau Highland. It is one of the four newly created Local Government Councils in Plateau State constituted in November 1996
  • Langtang North Local Government
    Langtang North Local Government area is one of the seventeen local government areas of Plateau State and has Langtang town as its headquarters. It lies 194 kilometres South East of Jos the Plateau State capital.
  • Langtang South
    Langtang South Local Government was created on August 21, 1991 and was one of the only three re- settlement areas that were established for the resettlement of second World War Veterans in 1948.
  • Mangu Local Government
    Created in 1976, Mangu Local Government is situated in the South Eastern part of Plateau State. It has an estimated popuh1tion of 203,514 people and a land area of 1,587.5 square
  • Mikang Local Government
    Created in the last quarrer of 1996, Mikang Local Government Area with Tunkus as its headquarters, has a land area of 630 square kilometres and a population of 44,000 people.
  • Pankshin Local Government
    Pankshin Local Government Area covers a land area of 1,434 square kilometres and is made up of 168,718 persons. The Area is inhabited by the Ngas, Mupun, Chip, Kadung and a host of other non tribes lies 20 kilometres south east.
  • Qua'an Pan Local Governement Area
    Created in 1989 with a population of abour 180,000 persons, the Council covers an area of about 2,688 square kilometres and is situated at the southern part of Jos, the Plateau State capital.
  • Riyom Local Government
    First created in 1980 and dissolved in 1983 but recreated on the 5th of December 1997, the Local Government consists of three districts namely Riyom, Bachit and Ganawuri
  • Shendam Local Government
    Shendam Local Government is located in Shendam, which is almost 254 kilometres to the South east, and on the foothills of the Jos highlands.
  • Wase Local Government
    Created in 1976, Wase Local Government area is located at about 216 kilometres from Jos, with its headquarters in Wase town
